Women in Business - Interview with Partner Unana Gogokhia
ICC Georgia interviewed Unana Gogokhia - Partner at BGI Legal
First of all, please tell us about your current activities at BGI Legal. what position and direction you work in, and in a few words, tell us about your future plans.
I am a partner at BGI Legal specializing in capital markets and financial mandates as well as corporate and commercial law. In my role as a partner, I am uniquely positioned to work with the firm’s diverse clients and on complex cross-border transactions, which have helped me grow professionally over the years.
BGI is Georgia’s leading law firm, top-ranked in all international legal directories which cover this region. Our team has been a legal market leader for the last 25 years, playing a pivotal role in major projects which have helped shape the business environment and the standard of legal excellence in this country. We align our corporate and team culture with our core values, which are reflected in our logo and can be summarized in three words: expertise, experience, efficiency. We have stayed ahead in our profession due to the highest professional, ethical, and business standards.
BGI has an extraordinary value to me and working here has a great advantage: we have the best team, intellectually stimulating environment and an incredible client base. As one of the firm’s two female partners, I envisage my career with this firm on a long-term basis, contributing to its further success and growth.
What was the biggest challenge on your career path, an obstacle that seemed insurmountable at first, but you were able to overcome it anyway?
I truly believe that no task is insurmountable if you prioritize workstreams efficiently and take a proactive and solution-oriented approach. Combining law with incisive knowledge of industry and multi-tasking together with the ability to think outside the box helps overcome any challenge. I am also very fortunate as I have an excellent team of other BGI partners and associates to rely on.
When I have a complex task or goal set before me, my mind never stops brooding over it until I resolve it to my satisfaction. I am just wired that way. They say perseverance and strong will are my personal traits and indeed I have trained myself to be driven by the quest for perfection in all endeavors and undertakings. The greatest artist Salvador Dali, who has always inspired me by his meticulous approach towards art and things that matter in life, said: “Have no fear of perfection – you will never reach it”. And it’s true, however, exploring boundaries of perfection opens new possibilities and unlocks our potential allowing us to perform at our best, affecting quality of our lives in so many directions, whether professional or not.
What is your main motivation to keep moving forward?
The success of our team is the best motivation. Growing professionally together and being instrumental in delivering top quality services and solutions to our clients is the most rewarding experience and achievement that keeps me and the rest of our team motivated. We are also motivated by the healthy ambition to excel and stand out in a competitive legal environment.
You won a Band 1 ranking in Chambers Global and Chambers Europe this year “climbing to the top tier this year as a result of exceptional market support”, according to this prestigious directory. Please, tell us more about this success?
My success story starts with BGI and builds upon its solid base and support of our strong team. BGI Legal and our partners continue to earn exceptional top rankings in Chambers and other legal directories, and we are very grateful to our clients and peers alike for their generous feedback and recognition.
Finally, limiting ourselves to the traditional question, what would you advise aspiring professionals and young people who are now taking their first career steps?
Knowing where one wants to be in the future at the early stages of one’s career is not an easy task. Therefore, the only practical and honest advice one can give to a younger generation on the eve of their long journey is to keep one’s mind open to opportunities as only their unique personality, abilities and genuine interest can steer one in the right direction in his or her career choices. It is therefore of utmost importance to listen to one’s inner voice, to attach great importance to strong discipline and remain dedicated to constant improvement. Enthusiasm, initiative, responsiveness, responsibility, courage and above all, the curious mind as well as skills of a good team player represent the key to success in a legal profession.
